Michael Smith

Director of Canopy Tour and Challenge Course Installation and Program Development Services

Mike completed his undergraduate degree in Wilderness Leadership at Prescott College in 1998 and his Master of Training and Development at Oakland University in 2004. His field experience includes six years as an instructor at the Pacific Crest Outward Bound School (now Outward Bound Wilderness) and fifteen years as a high ropes challenge course facilitator and challenge course trainer for S.T.E.P.S., Inc. Since 2005, Mike has led our efforts to develop an intensive canopy tour guide training program, refine operational procedures for canopy tours and adventure courses, and to build new canopy tours and aerial trekking courses.

Although frequently found in the office, Mike's true passion is working in the field building new adventure courses (including ropes courses, canopy tours, zip lines, and aerial trekking courses), leading adventure challenge programs, training challenge course staff and canopy tour guides, and working with corporations to develop staff and improve operations. He has been critical in the success of S.T.E.P.S., Inc. and an asset to canopy tour and adventure park clients looking to get started.

In addition to leading program development and marketing efforts for S.T.E.P.S., Mike has developed AdventureSmith, Inc., a small consultancy focusing on marketing and business development strategies for adventure-based companies. He has authored and self-published A Climber's Guide to Prescott Arizona , A Facilitator's Guide to Adventure Challenge Programming, and A Guide's Guide to Canopy Tours.

When not working, Mike's interests include mountaineering, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, web design, and spending time with his wife and son.
